How to Get the Best Results from Your Braces

By pinecrestortho | Braces, Orthodontics, Smiles | Comments are Closed | 10 April, 2019 | 0

Best Tips During Braces Treatment

If you’ve recently started Orthodontic treatment, or if you’re considering getting braces, there’s a few things that you’re probably wondering. Will they hurt, what will they look like, etc. But the most important question that you should ask is - How do I get the best results from my braces?

Your decision in starting Orthodontic treatment with braces was probably based on a few different factors. But in the end, if you’ve decided that braces were the right option for you, wouldn’t you want the best results possible?

Of course! And fortunately, getting the best results is easy when following a few simple steps.

1. Make Sure to Practice Good Oral Hygiene During Treatment
One of the most important things you can do during your treatment with braces is to keep up with excellent oral hygiene - this means brushing at least three times a day and flossing daily. Practicing good oral hygiene will not only ensure that your teeth stay strong and healthy, but it will also ensure that you avoid the infamous “bracket stains”.

What are “bracket stains”?

Bracket stains are white, permanent stains that some people have on their teeth following their treatment. They are caused by excessive plaque build-up over a long period of time, and they usually take the rectangular shape of the brackets that were placed on your teeth.

But don’t worry! These are completely preventable with regular, daily brushing & flossing. Good oral hygiene during treatment will ensure that your smile looks fantastic after all the work you’ve put into it!

2. Avoid Certain Types of Foods
Another important aspect of your treatment is watching the foods you eat, and avoiding certain foods that will cause breakage of your braces. Specifically it is important to avoid anything sticky or hard when you have braces. Sticky, gooey foods can cause orthodontic bands to become loose and also adhere to the braces and teeth. This adhesion can result in cavities due to the sugary nature of the sticky foods. Hard foods such as nuts or ice can also cause breakage of braces, which will extend treatment time.

Lastly, eating foods such as corn on the cob and popcorn can cause issues during your treatment because they are prone to get stuck in your braces very easily. Chances are, you’ve gotten corn or popcorn kernels stuck in your teeth before your treatment - imagine how much easier it is for them to get stuck in your teeth during treatment!

When it comes to getting the most out of your treatment with braces, keep your eye on the prize!

3. Make Sure to Stay on Top of Your Adjustment Visits
Staying on top of your treatment is necessary when it comes to getting great results with braces - this means attending all your visits when your Orthodontist recommends them.

You’ll likely have your braces adjusted about every 4-8 weeks, and it’s important that you schedule these visits early & often (per your Orthodontist’s recommendations). Keep in mind that the subtle tweaks in your braces are what is causing your teeth to move into position, so it’s very important that you follow your Orthodontist’s recommendations at each visit.

If you need to reschedule an appointment here or there, no biggie! But make sure to stay as close as possible to the adjustment dates that your Orthodontist gives you in order to experience the fastest and most-effective treatment possible.

4. Ask Your Orthodontist Questions

Don’t be afraid to speak up and ask your Orthodontist any questions you might have! Dr. Rothman and her team is glad to provide any help they can, and they will provide you with the answers or tips you’re looking for.

If you’re experiencing any discomfort or lifestyle issues with your braces, don’t hesitate to consult with Dr. Rothman and her team to find out what can be done to ensure a more pleasant treatment experience. They can provide dietary tips and advice about things like relieving the discomfort following adjustments. They can also help fix any issues the braces may be causing (wires irritating your cheeks, lips, etc).

5. Keep Thinking of the End Result
When it comes to getting the most out of your treatment with braces, keep your eye on the prize! Remember that following a few simple steps will ensure that you get the most out of your treatment and achieve the perfect result in the end. A few years of wearing braces is well worth a lifetime of having a beautiful and healthy smile!
