Braces for Teens

Welcome to Pinecrest Orthodontics, where we are dedicated to transforming smiles with personalized care and advanced orthodontic treatments. Led by Dr. Victoria Rothman, our friendly and professional team is here to ensure your teen receives the best possible care in a welcoming and fun environment. Whether your teen is interested in traditional braces or Invisalign, we have the expertise and technology to help them achieve a confident, beautiful smile!

Why Teens Need Orthodontic Treatment

Once a child’s baby teeth have fallen out and all of the permanent teeth erupt into the mouth, a wide variety of orthodontic issues may be present, including misaligned teeth, overcrowding, and bite issues. Addressing these problems in the teen years is easier than in an adult. It can also prevent more serious dental issues in the future and improve overall oral health. Additionally, having straight teeth can boost a teen's self-esteem and confidence during these formative years.

Types of Braces

  • Traditional Metal Braces: The most common type, made of high-grade stainless steel. They are smaller and more comfortable today than ever before.

  • Ceramic Braces: Less visible than metal braces since the brackets are clear and blend with the natural color of teeth. Only the metal wire is visible.
  • Invisalign: A series of clear, removable plastic aligners that straighten teeth without metal wires or brackets.

Why Teens Might Need Different Types of Orthodontic Appliances

Each teen’s orthodontic needs and personal preferences can vary greatly, necessitating different types of braces to achieve the best results. Here are the key reasons why different types of braces or Invisalign might be recommended:

Traditional Metal Braces

  • Impacted Teeth: Traditional braces are necessary for orthodontic cases in which an impacted tooth needs to be surgically exposed and brought into place with the braces.
  • Compliance: When a teen’s compliance wearing the aligners as prescribed is questionable, traditional braces may be the desired treatment option.
  • Personal Preference: Metal braces are sometimes desirable due to the colorful aspect of the colored rubber bands that hold the wire into the brackets.

Ceramic Braces

  • Aesthetic Concerns: Ceramic braces offer a more discreet option for teens who are self-conscious about their appearance but still prefer the fixed option. They blend in with the natural color of teeth, making them less noticeable.

Invisalign

  • Comfort: Smooth plastic aligners are often more comfortable than traditional braces and are less likely to irritate the inside of the mouth.
  • Oral Hygiene: Invisalign aligners are removable, which allows teens to maintain their oral hygiene routines and hence are preferable when hygiene maintenance is a concern.
  • Diet: The removable aspect of the aligners also allows teens to enjoy their normal diet without any restrictions.
  • Aesthetic Preference: Invisalign is nearly invisible, making it an attractive option for teens concerned about their appearance during treatment.
  • Sensory Issues: Invisalign is the preferred option for teens with sensory issues who may find traditional braces bothersome.

Benefits of Teen Orthodontic Treatment

  • Ease of Tooth Movement: Teeth move much more easily and predictably in growing teens as compared to adults, whose surrounding bone structure is fully developed and hence less “moldable”.
  • Prevents Future Issues: Correcting bite and alignment issues early can prevent more severe dental problems later.
  • Improves Oral Health: Straighter teeth are easier to clean, reducing the risk of cavities and gum disease.
  • Boosts Confidence: A beautiful smile can significantly enhance a teen's self-esteem.
