What to Expect and How to Care for Your Smile
Pro Tips for Life With Braces
Braces are a powerful tool for improving alignment, bite function, and long-term oral health. While treatment can be life-changing, it also requires partnership. Consistent home care, mindful food choices, and regular visits all play a role in keeping treatment on track and protecting your smile.
At Pinecrest Orthodontics, we believe great results come from a combination of expert planning and informed patients. Understanding how to care for your braces helps minimize delays, prevent damage, and ensure your smile stays healthy throughout treatment—and beyond.
Eating With Braces: What to Enjoy and What to Avoid
When you have braces, certain foods can damage brackets and wires or increase the risk of cavities. Two categories
deserve special attention: sticky foods and hard or crunchy foods.
Foods to Avoid
Sticky foods can cling to brackets and wires, making them difficult to clean and more likely to cause damage. Avoid:
- Gum
- Gummy candies
- Caramels and taffy
Sticky foods can bend wires, loosen brackets, and trap sugar against teeth—leading to white spots and early decay.
Hard or crunchy foods can break brackets or wires, which may delay treatment and require extra visits. Avoid:
- Nuts
- Ice
- Hard pizza crust
- Hard candies
Foods that require biting into—such as apples or corn on the cob—should be cut into bite-sized pieces before eating.
Foods You Can Enjoy
There are plenty of braces-friendly options, including:
- Yogurt, ice cream, and other soft dairy products
- Cheese (which can help protect enamel)
- Fruits and cooked vegetables
- Grains, pasta, and rice
- Fish and tender meats
Choosing braces-safe foods protects your appliances and supports healthy teeth and gums during treatment.
Caring for Braces at Home
Successful orthodontic treatment depends on consistent daily habits. The most important steps include:
- Keeping all scheduled orthodontic appointments
- Avoiding foods that can damage appliances
- Practicing thorough daily oral hygiene
These habits help prevent broken brackets, reduce the risk of cavities, and keep treatment progressing as planned.
Brushing and Flossing With Braces
Orthodontic appliances make cleaning more detailed—but just as important as ever.
Brushing Tips
- Brush at least three times per day for two minutes
- Brush after meals and before bedtime whenever possible
- Angle the toothbrush to clean around brackets, wires, and along the gumline
- Use gentle, circular motions
- An electric toothbrush with orthodontic heads is highly recommended
Flossing Tips
- Floss daily to keep gums healthy
- Use floss threaders or orthodontic floss to guide floss under the wire
- Clean carefully between each tooth and along the gumline
- Water flossers (such as Waterpik®) can be a helpful option
Interproximal (“Christmas tree”) brushes are also useful for cleaning between brackets and wires where plaque can hide.
Managing Discomfort During Treatment
It’s normal to experience some tenderness after braces are placed or following adjustment visits. This discomfort
typically lasts only a few days.
Helpful tips include:
- Choosing soft foods temporarily
- Using an over-the-counter pain reliever if needed
- Applying orthodontic wax if a wire or bracket causes irritation
If discomfort persists or something feels unusual, contact the office so we can evaluate and help.
What If a Bracket or Wire Breaks?
Occasionally, brackets or wires may loosen or break during treatment.
- If a bracket comes loose but isn’t painful, it can usually remain on the wire until your appointment
- Use orthodontic wax to reduce irritation if needed
- Call the office during business hours to schedule a repair visit
Prompt communication helps keep treatment moving smoothly.
Patient Tips for a Successful Outcome
The most important factor in orthodontic success is patient cooperation. Great results come from:
- Keeping all orthodontic appointments
- Practicing excellent home care
- Maintaining regular dental cleanings
- Making smart food choices
These habits help protect your teeth and ensure your smile finishes strong.
